GET TO KNOW THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Find a gentler Kyoto.

Walk the imperial gardens, follow the river and enter Shimogamo’s trees. Give the textile streets of Nishijin their own unhurried visit.

The story of this neighbourhood

North Kyoto is a broad area, so choose a thread for the day. The imperial gardens and river work well together; Nishijin deserves a textile-led visit of its own. This is also a part of the city where coffee, lunch and a familiar neighbourhood shop can become the reason for going.

The imperial grounds recall the centuries when the court lived in Kyoto, while Nishijin tells the story of the people who made its textiles. The name Nishijin—“western camp”—is associated with the western army’s position during the Ōnin War. Weaving communities helped rebuild the district after the destruction.

To the east, Shimogamo Shrine and the meeting of the Kamo and Takano rivers offer another way into the north: a wooded sacred precinct, open water and residential streets. Leave room for the spaces between the landmarks.

SIGHTS & STORIES

Kyoto Imperial Gardens

Kyoto Imperial Gardens

Kyoto Imperial Gardens

Kyoto Gyoen surrounds the former imperial palace, preserving a great open space on land once occupied by court residences.

A closer look

Walk the broad gravel paths, then choose whether to visit the palace itself under its separate arrangements. The park and palace are different experiences, so do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

Shimogamo Shrine

Shimogamo Shrine

Shimogamo Shrine

One of Kyoto’s oldest shrines, Shimogamo stands within the Tadasu-no-Mori grove.

A closer look

Its history predates the capital’s establishment here, and it remains central to the Aoi Matsuri tradition. Approach slowly through the trees rather than arriving only at the inner buildings.

Nishijin

Nishijin

Nishijin

The weaving district is best understood through textiles, not simply through a photograph of an old street.

A closer look

Start with a visitor-facing demonstration, exhibition or booked workshop at the Nishijin Textile Center, then explore the surrounding lanes. Many premises are still homes and workplaces.

Kyoto Botanical Gardens

Kyoto Botanical Gardens

Kyoto Botanical Gardens

Opened in 1924, the prefectural botanical gardens add a different kind of seasonality to a Kyoto stay. Explore the outdoor collections and decide whether to add the conservatory.

A closer look

This is a substantial northern outing, well paired with coffee around Kitayama rather than rushed into a central sightseeing day.

Food in North Kyoto

AT THE TABLE

Neighbourhood favourites.

Coffee, vegan ramen and places worth returning to.

01 / BURRITOS

Que Pasa

My old favourite spot—say hi to Ryota. Go to the Marutamachi location for a burrito and a casual meal near the imperial gardens; there is also a separate downtown branch.

02 / EVENING DRINKS & FOOD

Demachi Stand

An evening stop near Demachiyanagi for food and a drink after a river walk. It opens later in the day, so keep it as a finish rather than a lunch stop.

03 / COFFEE ROASTERY

Café Verdi

The Shimogamo coffee roastery is a destination in its own right. Choose a coffee and give yourself time to sit; it fits a northern Kyoto day particularly well.

04 / VEGAN RAMEN

Towzen

Vegan soy-milk ramen in Shimogamo, with a rich broth that makes this a meal to seek out.

05 / VEGAN / JAPANESE / NISHIJIN

ITADAKIZEN KYOTO

A plant-based meal in the Nishijin area. Build it into a northern Kyoto day and check reservations before setting off.
