5 DAYS / RURAL TOHOKU
Tohoku Road Trip
Rugged coast, temple towns, and the quieter northeast.
Explore the five-day itinerary
A focused road trip through Miyagi and Iwate, connecting coastal landscapes with the history of Hiraizumi. This is a taste of Tohoku, with time for local food and small detours, rather than an attempt to cover the whole region.
- Day 1: SendaiArrive, explore the city, and settle in over regional food. Collect a car when you are ready to leave the city.
- Day 2: Matsushima BaySpend the morning among the bay’s islands and temple grounds. Continue towards Hiraizumi for the night, allowing time for the drive.
- Day 3: HiraizumiGive Chūson-ji and Mōtsū-ji an unhurried day. Explore their gardens and the legacy of the Northern Fujiwara before continuing the following morning.
- Day 4: Towards the Sanriku coastDrive east to Miyako, making the journey itself part of the day. Walk around Jōdogahama’s pale rocks and sheltered water; stay in Miyako.
- Day 5: KitayamazakiFollow the coast north for cliff-top viewpoints and a short walk. Return to Miyako or allow a separate onward travel day; avoid squeezing the coast and a long departure into one afternoon.
5 DAYS / SETO INLAND SEA
Seto Inland Sea Journey
Island roads, harbor towns, and an old maritime crossroads.
Explore the five-day itinerary
Follow the eastern Shimanami islands from Onomichi towards Imabari. Long before the bridges, the Seto Inland Sea connected ports, people and trade. This five-day route keeps the focus on a small group of islands, with short rides or drives and time beside the water.
- Day 1: OnomichiExplore hillside temple lanes, the waterfront and small shops. Stay overnight so you can enjoy the harbor after the day visitors leave.
- Day 2: Setoda on IkuchijimaTravel to Setoda, then explore the port town, Kōsan-ji and the island’s citrus-growing landscape. Choose the day’s boat or road connection around current schedules.
- Day 3: Slow down on IkuchijimaSpend another day on the island: rent a bicycle for a manageable coastal stretch, stop at a beach, and leave time for cafés and local food.
- Day 4: ŌmishimaContinue to Ōmishima for Ōyamazumi Shrine, quieter roads and coastal viewpoints. Book an island stay and plan dinner ahead.
- Day 5: Towards ImabariContinue across the remaining islands and bridges at a pace that suits you. Confident cyclists can ride part of the route; others can arrange road transport, finishing in Imabari.
