building around.

Cherry blossom walks

SPRING

Cherry blossom walks

Build a flexible morning around Chidorigafuchi, Ueno or a smaller park near your base. Blossom timing changes each year; follow the season rather than booking every day around a predicted peak.

Sanja Matsuri

MAY

Sanja Matsuri

Asakusa’s streets fill with neighbourhood processions and portable shrines. Give the festival space in the day, follow stewards’ directions and check the shrine’s current programme before choosing where to watch.

Sumida River fireworks

SUMMER

Sumida River fireworks

An evening that changes the rhythm of the riverside. Check the official date, viewing arrangements and transport guidance, then arrive with time to spare. Expect crowds and a slower journey home.

Kanda Used Book Festival

LATE OCTOBER–EARLY NOVEMBER

Kanda Used Book Festival

Jimbocho’s booksellers bring shelves out along Yasukuni-dōri, turning a browsing afternoon into a festival. Look for art books, maps and illustrated volumes, then pause for curry or coffee nearby. Check the year’s programme for specialist sales and talks.

Asakusa Tori no Ichi

NOVEMBER

Asakusa Tori no Ichi

The fair around Ōtori Shrine and Chōkoku-ji fills with stalls selling decorative kumade rakes as charms for good fortune. Come for the vendors’ calls, food stalls and evening atmosphere. Dates follow the traditional calendar’s days of the rooster, so check which evenings the fair falls on.

Marunouchi illuminations

WINTER

Marunouchi illuminations

Pair an evening walk along the illuminated streets with dinner around Tokyo Station. Seasonal lighting makes an ordinary city walk feel different; confirm the dates for the winter you are visiting.

MAKE A LITTLE MORE TIME

On the periphery.

Coastal towns, old streets and mountain paths.
Give one direction a day of its own.

Kamakura

TEMPLES & THE COAST

Kamakura

Choose a temple route and leave time for the sea. The Great Buddha and Hase area make one approach; northern temple walks offer another. Make this a full day, with lunch and the return journey in mind.

Plan a visit
Kawagoe

WAREHOUSE STREETS & SMALL SHOPS

Kawagoe

Walk the warehouse district, look into the smaller shops and build in a local lunch. An easy change of scale from central Tokyo, best enjoyed at a pace that lets the streets become more than a photographic stop.

Plan a visit
Mount Takao

A DAY IN THE HILLS

Mount Takao

Choose a trail suited to your energy and the weather, with time for Yakuō-in and the views. Even when using a cable car or chair lift, allow for walking and check the final descent arrangements.

Plan a visit
Nikkō

SHRINES & FOREST

Nikkō

The shrine and temple district deserves an early departure and a full day. For the lakes, waterfalls and longer walks beyond town, consider staying overnight rather than fitting everything around a return train.
