Walk from the beach to a wilder shoreline, then give the afternoon to a hot spring. A night here leaves room for the changing light.
The story behind the place
Shirahama offers a change of rhythm on Wakayama’s coast. A morning can begin on white sand, move along shelves of weathered rock, and finish in a hot spring. Give it a night or two and those pauses become part of the journey.
The beach is called Shirarahama; the town is Shirahama. Around the bay, the resort’s easy pleasures sit alongside an older story of water, rock and bathing. Look beyond the beachfront and there is plenty to notice.
This small offshore island is formally called Takashima. Its familiar name, Engetsu, comes from the rounded opening in the rock, shaped by the sea.
A closer look
View it from the mainland shore as the light softens towards evening. Around spring and autumn there are opportunities to see the setting sun through the opening, but the alignment depends on the day and where you stand.
Step away from the beachfront for a day-use hot spring in Kogaura. Chōsei-no-Yu combines indoor and outdoor baths with a setting of trees and natural materials.

Its building reuses the frame of an early Shōwa-era wooden warehouse.
Allow enough time to change, bathe and sit for a moment afterwards. It is a candidate for the quieter middle of the day, or an alternative when the weather makes a coastal walk less appealing.
